A hungry field mouse in the bleak winter snow, finds a small cache of wheat kernels. Now he has enough to keep him going until spring. But his neighbors are hungry too. Little does he imagine, as he reluctantly gives up his only meal, the amazing truth about where the wheat comes from. With a surprising twist, this charming parable illustrates God’s amazing ability to abundantly meet the needs of generous givers.
The story is a parable so it works like a metaphor. The mouse does not see the amazing source of food and has to struggle with his own hunger when he decides whether or not to give to others. In the same way, we don’t see God or his vast resources for providing for us. When we encounter people who need something from us, we struggle like the mouse and wonder if we’ll have what we need if we give what we have away. But we have a promise from God in the Bible. God promises to provide for the needs of generous people!

“I was left feeling humbled and emotional after reading Wendy Talené and Neil W. Anderson’s story The Parable of the Field Mouse, as it hits you with a message. I am not religious, but I do have certain things I believe in, and one of the main things is included in this story. The implied message is “Give and it will be given to you” as it states on the last page of the book. This message is so important for everyone, not just children, to learn as it teaches you to be selfless and help those that are in need. The story is beautiful from start to finish and I would happily read it again and again. The illustrations are so cute and adorable, and children will find them delightful. Children may also not realize that they have learned this important message because of how good the writing is. Wendy has used rhyming to structure her story and it makes the book so much more enjoyable. I want to wish Wendy Talené and contributor Neil W. Anderson the very best in their creative journeys and I hope the two of them collaborate again in the future.”
